Health Enhancement Comprehensive Curriculum

Helena School District intensively reviewed and developed a comprehensive health enhancement curriculum. The K-12 Health Enhancement Curriculum Committee met monthly during 2009-2010 coupled with several sub-committee teams in an effort to draft a coordinated health education plan for students in grades K-12. Helena’s K-12 Health Enhancement Curriculum Committee consisted of regular education classroom teachers, physical education teachers, health instructors, law enforcement officials, Department of  Public Health and Human Services, Lewis and Clark Health Department liaisons, social service coordinators, school psychologists,  administrators, parents and other community members. Members researched best practices, state and national standards to identify a powerful foundation for drafting a curriculum that reflects a research-based comprehensive approach to health education. Components within the document identify K-12 critical competencies in the following areas:

Health Maintenance and Enhancement:
  • Personal Health and Preventative Care
  • Nutrition
  • Consumer Health and Safety
  • Life Management Skills
Functions and Interrelationship of Systems:
  • Structure and Functions of the Body
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health
  • Human Sexuality
Risk Assessment and Reduction:
  • Disease Prevention and Control
  • Injury Prevention and Safety
  • Environmental Health
Each of the above categories is sub-divided into more specific areas in an effort to provide a sequenced and coordinated school health program. Helena Public School’s Health Enhancement Curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students in maintaining and improving health-related knowledge, attitudes, skills and practices.
