Martin Luther King Jr. Day Schedule of Events:

 

January 16th and 17th: Service Projects! Check out My MLK Day for opportunities here in Helena.

AmeriCorps members are conducting a food/commodities drive at Safeway and Walgreens on Saturday January 16th and Sunday January 17th from 10:30am-5:30pm each day. Drop off donations at either location. Volunteers are needed to stand at the doors to accept donations from 10:30-1:00, 1:00-3:00, and 3-5:30 each day.

12pm-3pm: MLK Jr. Diversity Fair, Bryant Elementary School Gymnasium

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and to commemorate this day in an act of service and celebration, the Helena community is invited to the Capitol Rotunda to reflect on Reverend King’s legacy and teachings. Community partners in this event include: AmeriCorps national service programs, Carroll College and the Helena School District. The event will feature:

12:00 p.m. Diversity Fair Begins with introduction of Coach R, the keynote speaker

12:05 p.m. Coach R speaks

12:30 p.m. Big Sky Dance Troupe performs

1:30 p.m. Tiernan Irish Dance performs

2:00 p.m. Ken Taylor, Scottish Drumming

2:45 p.m. End of Diversity Fair with reading of “I Have a Dream” speech

Coach R is a former African American NBA player who decided to move to Harlem Montana to make a difference in the lives of those in the community of on the Fort Belknap reservation. Coach R is the coach of the Harlem Wildcats High School Girls Basketball team. He will talk about the impact Martin Luther King Jr. has made on his life and share some of this life experiences and wisdom.

Events at Carroll

On Monday, January 18, 2010, students will take a break from classes and observe Carroll College's annual Martin Luther King Day celebration, featuring the evening forum, "Experiencing Prejudice and Discrimination," in the lower level of the Campus Center. Panelists sharing their first-hand run-ins with racism will include Barbara Warfield of Atlanta, Ga.; OPI-Indian Education Specialist Mike Jetty, a member of the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation; and Carroll Vice President for Advancement Dr. Richard Ortega. It begins at 7:30 p.m. and Sociology Professor Rev. Jerry Lowney, Ph.D., will moderate.

This is the capstone of the day, which opens with an 11 a.m. Mass in honor of Dr. King in St. Joseph's Chapel, Borromeo Hall, with celebrant Rev. Lowney and musical guests/Carroll Professors Anne Perkins and Jack Oberweiser. At 1 p.m., students, faculty and staff will be volunteering at God's Love homeless shelter and Helena Food Share.

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Film Festival

All events take place at the Myrna Loy Center.

3:30pm - THE WITNESS: FROM THE BALCONY OF ROOM 306

In 1968 the Reverend Samuel "Billy" Kyles stood beside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and bore witness to his brutal assassination.

4:15pm - SOCIAL JUSTICE SHORT FILM SERIES

From gay rights to immigration and gun violence among youth, these short films are equally diverse in style and content. What they all have in common is sparkling debate and action in a few short minutes.

5:15pm - GIVEN TO WALK

Thiry years after the Supreme Court took away the right to prosecute "non-Indians" from tribal courts, an Americna Indian mother realizes that her family cannot escape violence due to a lingering jurisdictional nightmare on her reservation.

6:00pm - RECEPTION

7:00pm - TRAINING RULES

No drinking, no drigs, no lesbians women's collegiate sports, caught in a web of homophobic practices, leads to the destruction of the lives and dreams of many of its most talented athletes.
